I love my online friends. Thanks to you, I’ve been introduced to dozens of video games that I would never have heard of before! One game in particular blew my mind!
Game Dev Tycoon is a game produced by Greenheart Games back in July 2012. Yeah, it’s been out for close to a year at this point. So I’ve been hiding under a rock this entire time apparently, because I have no idea how I missed this game.
A game simulator about developing video games. I loved the concept. It was clever!
The beauty of this game is in its simplicity. You play a video game programmer working out of a garage. The game literally has you starting from scratch like the game programmers of the 1980s did in order for you to work your way to success. The only thing you have to do is make a game. Nothing more and nothing less.
Make a name. Pick a topic, genre, and platform for it and go. That’s all there’s to it in the beginning. From there, a few new options come up. Researching to develop new technologies… oh, you can also take contracts to earn extra money on the side. Really, the game never gets complicated or bogged down in pointless additions and options that we see in most modern games. And believe me, that’s refreshing! After playing game after game that’s filled with so many fancy bells and whistles, a game that’s straight forward is a pleasant change.
Be careful not to go into the red or else EA can and will buy you out. Yep, that’s right. The creators of this game went there.
I found this game to be highly addictive and satisfying. As you can see, I was starting to make a decent profit when I hit my five year limit for the demo. And I didn’t do too shabby. I was going to make Mass Effect Baseball next. Ah… what could have been….
You will not regret it.
You can find it on Steam, on their website, as well as through the Windows Apps store.
This game is highly, highly recommended!
