Hello folks, Dale here, and look at what we have.
First reported by Latino Review and soon after confirmed by Variety, it has been revealed that actor Josh Brolin (‘The Goonies’, ‘True Grit‘, ‘No Country For Old Men’) has been cast as arch-villain Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
WOW!! This is big news folks. Think of Thanos as like the Emperor from Star Wars, he is the master manipulator, the overlord, the nemesis of the universe itself. The character was first seen at the end of ‘The Avengers‘ and will next be seen in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, yet his presence has been felt all across the Cinematic Universe, being behind Loki’s Invasion of Earth, ruling the Empire that will feature in ‘Guardians’ and is directly connected to the Collector (Benicio Del Toro), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Ronan (Lee Pace). Joss Whedon has also spoken about how he is being built up to in ‘Avengers 3′.
The character has appeared throughout Marvel comics for decades now, but he is notably most famous and iconic for ‘The Infinity Gauntlet’ story arc which saw the evil tyrant become a God-like being with control over the very laws of reality itself and face off against the main players of the Marvel Universe, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Doom, Wolverine, Captain America, and even Galactus. (P.S. I highly recommend you read the comic, it’s fantastic)
The films are clearly already slowly building their way towards the Infinity Gauntlet, as the Tesseract, the Aether, the silver orb in ‘Guardians‘, and possibly Loki’s staff are Infinity Stones, the gauntlet itself has a cameo in ‘Thor’, and Joss Whedon hinted at the future by saying “Death. Death. Death.” In Marvel Comics, the personification of Death plays a large role in ‘The Infinity Gauntlet‘.
I personally quite like Brolin as an actor and look forward to seeing his take on the grand villain, though it is being reported that he will portray his voice only. Interestingly, Brolin was one of the leading contenders to play the new Batman in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice‘, before losing out to Ben Affleck.
If you can’t be the Dark Knight, the Mad Titan isn’t a bad second choice.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ hits theatres August 1st 2014.
