Press Start To Begin reviews Flump Studio’s latest game: Pester. Read on and find out how you can win a copy of this game for yourself!

Pester

Flump Studios’ recently updated this game, one of their very first releases. This game plays a lot like the old school vertical shoot-’em’-up games (called SHUMP games these days) that I knew when growing up. They added a couple of new features, giving a new spin to their classic game. Are the new features enough to merit picking this game up?

Let’s find out together

Gameplay:  7 out of 10

Pester’s gameplay is a loving tribute to the shooters of the past, and that’s a good thing. It has all the gameplay elements one expects to have in these types of games. Enemies fly at you from the top of the screen shooting bullets and flying toward the bottom of the screen. The player controls a ship starting at the bottom of the screen. The player can move up/down/left/right to dodge the bullets and enemies. It’s surprisingly challenging, if you include all the natural hazards the player has to get around as well. All the while, the player needs to try to destroy the advancing enemy for points. It’s very fast paced, so you’ll be on the edge of your seat. Guaranteed.

The reason why it’s not higher is that the gameplay doesn’t try to break the mold of usual SHUMP games. This isn’t a bad thing, mind you. It plays exactly how we expect these types of games to be. But when compared to their Super Killer Hornet and Super Killer Hornet: Resurrection, it’s easy to see how much better these types of games can be!

Features:  10 out of 10

This game has some marvelous features, and a lot of them unlockable too! First off, you can rotate the screen! It’s really awesome too, since I play this on my laptop using an Xbox 360 controller. All I do is go full screen with the game (another great feature), then rotate it sideways, then put my laptop on it’s side. Doing this really, really reminds me of the arcade experience!

You can unlock modes, backgrounds and musical tracks. If you look at the settings, you can select  ships from other games. And if you don’t like the overlay, you can change it. This game really is customizable, having some really cool features. The best feature, to me, is the “Duo” modifier.

I used my Xbox 360 controller with it. I think that’s the only way you can do it. You control two ships at the same time. That’s right. Two ships. Each ship was controlled by one of the two joysticks. I loved it. It’s such an unconventional feature, making the game 10x more difficult. I suspect it’s there to add that extra layer of challenge that gamers demand.

So as features goes, this is arguable the best SHUMP out there.

Graphics and Sound:  7 out of 10

This one, I have trouble with. In my mind, this should also be a 10 out of 10. But when I look at the games that Flump Studios made, I know exactly what they can do with graphics. The Studio sets the bar for graphics and music with this type of game. The graphics they decided to use for this game is clearly retro. So if that’s what you are looking for in a game, then this really is the game for you! The graphics are retro.

The music… I couldn’t get into at first. When the game started, and the electronic sound started, I ended up hitting mute. It didn’t do much to get me in the mood to play this type of game. It’s titled “Drifted.” It’s a shame Flump Studios picked this one because every other track they have is far superior. If there was an option to change the starting music, I would have rated this an 8 out of 10, easy.

Replayability:  10 out of 10

I’m still trying to unlock everything! And dear lord, this game is so addictive, it should come with a warning label.

Total Score: 34 out of 40

I don’t think Flump Studios knows how to make a bad game. When I talked to the developer of this game, he was actually apologizing for it, saying that I’d probably have fun with rotating the screen. I don’t know if he was just pulling my leg or underselling this game! Either way, Flump Studios is sitting on yet another fine example of a classic SHUMP game done right!
