Video Games Are Educational: Playing as a Veterinarian

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) released a game created by Game Gurus designed to introduce the veterinary world to students between K – 12. The video game, simply titled AVMA Animal Hospital Video Game, is a web-based game that is also available on the Google Play and Apple Store. The player has a choice between a male and female veterinarian who works at a AVMA hospital. The veterinarian diagnoses and treats animals, earning promotions along the way until they become Chief Veterinarian. The animals that are available to be treated are cats, dogs, birds, turtles, and guinea pigs. The game is designed to be simple to learn, but difficult to master.

This game teaches time management skills, as the player needs to learn to budget time in order to treat all the animals that come through. The game also teaches medical terminology, ailments, and treatment options for animals, functioning as an introduction to veterinary science and medicine.
