The 8th Generation of Consoles

Welcome to the 8th Generation of gaming.

Wii U. Xbox One. Playstation 4. Are you ready for this generation? Are you excited?

I’m not.

Poor Mario

Poor Mario

The Wii U had a lackluster debut and has been stumbling ever since. 3rd party developers are still steering clear of the system because of incredibly awkward controls and disappointed specs. The Virtual Console’s still pretty fun, letting the gamer play games from past systems like F-Zero, Punch-Out, Super Metroid, Ghosts n’ Goblins, and so on. Outside of that, there doesn’t seem to be too much for the Wii U in the near future. It’s like Nintendo isn’t even trying with the system. Sure, there’s the occasional hit. But think about it..

Wii U came out November 2012… and it’s only sold 3 million copies. To make things sadder for Nintendo, the Wii console is outselling the Wii U. If Nintendo doesn’t turn this around soon, there’s no way they’ll come close to repeating the dominating performance they did with the 7th generation.

Seems accurate, sadly.

Seems accurate, sadly.

The Xbox One hasn’t even debuted yet, and it’s getting hammered by the gaming community. Concerns about the Kinect always being on, the cameras and microphones always monitoring, and licencing fees for used games are some of the many concerns people have about this system. Yes, you read that right. The system comes off as a creepy Big Brother (a la 1984) mixed in with a greedy SOB. Forcing gamers to pay extra for used games? Seriously?

I get how they are getting away with it legally with digital rights. This is legal. Sadly, this is also unprecedented. People have been buying used games for as long as there have been video games. This is the the first time a console is making the gamer pay extra for the game. And if the rumors are correct, the gamer will be forced to pay full price for the game.

Greedy pricks.

Pardon my language.

The only stuff that's known about the PS4

The only stuff that’s known about the PS4

All that Sony has to do is not screw up. They revealed the dual-shock controller and the motion sensor. Not much else is known. But based off the horrible press the Xbox One has and the abyssal failure known as the Wii U, Sony only has to present their console and say: “this plays games. Yay.” That’s it.

But is this really all we have to look forward to? Sony trying not to screw up…

Is there any hope at all?

Rumor has it, Steam is making a console.

Rumor has it, Steam is making a console.

Yes. Yes there is hope. Valve.

I think it’s time for a new system to step forward. And I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping that the rumors are true, that Valve is making a home console so gamers can download from Steam and play them just like any other console game.

What about you? Are you optimistic? Pessimistic? What are your thoughts on the 8th generation of video game consoles?

  1. I loved your piece! Perfect timing on a subject that poses the question gamers are asking: Is this it?. What I would like to see gaming companies do is not invest in newer systems but in better games that are rich in stories, great fighting and well written characters.
